I’m sure if you’re a frequent visitor to this blog, you would know of my fascination with buses, be it locally or abroad. And I have this special interest in Malaysian interstate coaches, particularly the double-deckers. Until a couple of years back, no one would have thought that coach operators will acquire double-deckers for their operations. And lately, numerous big names in the industry have introduced, or at least planned to introduce double-deckers into their stable. I shall dedicate this special entry to the colourful double-deckers of Malaysia.
The first coach operator to introduce a double-decker in their fleet was NiCE, or Nationwide Interstate Coach Express. NiCE with its brand such as Plusliner, NiCE 2 and NiCE++, operates to various cities and towns in Peninsular Malaysia, as well as Singapore. The double-decker coach service, christened NiCE 2, was designed specifically for the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore sector. It made big headlines in the local media because of its novelty. Designed by Bee Hing Coachworks, it was fitted onto the Scania chassis. The service received good response from customers initially, but passenger numbers dwindled not long after. It is believed that NiCE 2 succumbed to stiff competition from other operators in the sector.

Since then, a myriad of operators and models from the many bus bodybuilders in Malaysia have sprung up. While some opted to include a range of services and frills onboard to attract passengers, others remained conventional with the facilities onboard. Transtar Express, considered as one of the pioneers in the industry, has a fleet of double-deckers on its Premium, First Class and First Class Solitaire classes. Amongst the facilities and amenities provided onboard are, personal entertainment system with LCD screens, massaging chair, reclined seats and F&B service, just to name a few.

Other operators followed suit, creating somewhat a new trend among interstate coach operators. Now, almost similar amenities an be found onboard Five Stars Express, Aeroline, Konsortium Bas Ekspres Semenanjung (KBES), Airebus, Grassland Express and several others. Such luxurious settings, however, are mostly found on double-deckers serving the Singapore sector.

There are other double-decker operators which operates such buses within Malaysia. These buses, on the contrary, lacked the many luxurious facilities on their cross-border counterparts. While some operators opted to upgrade the level of comfort with the new 2+1 seating configuration, some like Mahligai and eMutiara maintained the conventional 2+2 seating configuration.

Ever since the beginning of the decade, almost every big name in the interstate coach express industry have begun to introduce double-deckers in their fleet. Mahligai Express, eMutiara Express and Sani Express, which are the leading operators in the East Coast, all have new and modern double-deckers since June 2008. Transnasional, the nation’s largest interstate coach operator, have also introduce their Skyview double-deckers on their trips to the East Coast, and the latest to Johor Bahru in the South. Mayang Sari Express and KKKL Express also has double-deckers on their Southern routes. The incumbent operators up north, like Durian Burung Express, AB Express, Jelita Transtours and KBES, were among the first to deploy such coaches anywhere in Malaysia. Looking into the future, several other big names like Suasana Edaran Express, Cepat Express and SP Bumi Express are rumoured to have ordered double-deckers for their interstate operations.

Double-decker buses are not only popular with the coach companies. Believe it or not, government agency and even a university have also acquired double-deckers! Double-deckers can also be seen operating as citybuses in the Klang Valley, as well as in Malacca.

There seem to be no pause or a lack of interest for double-decker coaches. We can expect more operators to jump into the bandwagon. The market leaders are also constantly replacing their fleet with newer double-deckers. With levels of comfort reaching new highs, the consumers are the obvious winners in this competition. However, with prices of oil ever on the increase, it is unlikely operators will reduce ticket prices, even with stiff competition.

There are limited double decker bus chassis in our market. Suppliers only limit to Scania and MAN. How about other Japanese players and Mercedes Benz?

Hi Keng Mun. Indeed. I’m pleasantly surprised that more and more tour operators are adding double-deckers to their fleet. Hopefully, I can do a follow-up on the tour operators soon.
I don’t think Mercedes-Benz offers any double-decker chassis. The Japanese makes however, have had chassis specifically designed for double-deckers. Not sure if the Malaysian operators would want to acquire them.

There is a double decker chassis by Mercedes Benz. It is called the 2036. Its a double axle chassis and is being sold in Thailand. Can be found at http://www.mercedes-benz.co.th.
For Japanese make, there is only the recond type available by SKS. It uses the Nissan RE10 engine.

Assalamualaikum, i just want to give my opinion..too many Double Deck buses in Malaysia will gradually dissapeared th legendary of single Deck (SD) bus express..the riding feels different, double deck is not sustainable with outside environment to the passanger..especially at lower cabin..also the stability issues..because the COG value much better for SD..
By: microchip on 8 May 2009
at 6:49 pm
one more..to many companies investing high capital fo DD bus..will kill the company itself because after the bus has reach the life time (approx) after 5 years..the bus value down so much..compared to 1st OTR because much of the market demand for 2nd hand bus was the SD bus..school, factory, tours bus..the fluctuating volume of passangers also not promised at this moment, or any onward..so dont too much la fighting to buy the DD..low safety much built by fiber glasses to make it ‘cun..cantik’ but very brittle whr crash, danger as movng coffin to passangers..no cramping, high impct when crashing..only the coach bulider company become billionaire selling this moving coffin..
By: microchip on 8 May 2009
at 6:56 pm
malaysian people fast amazed with somethin ‘big’ beautiful design but not realized most(maybe 99%) of malaysian built coachbus builder didnt certified by R66-compliance rool over, crach test complience..but they brave enough to bulit somany DD bus without goverment say anything..as long as can gain multiple profits..just 10 peoples died in crash nothing la..close ur eyes laa..so many ‘ah tongah beng’ coach builder in Malaysia, esp in Johor, Selangor, Perak, Penang.. making money easyly..built the bus to be coffin bus..just put heavy cosmetics outside the bus company and passenger will amazed..woww..giss..that malaysian..
By: microchip on 8 May 2009
at 7:02 pm
as usual la..wheh the crash happen..the most pointed was the bus operator compny..not the body builders.. body builders company 1st need to be in the court if any damage or death of bus passanger..to make sure their bus meet the certificates..or just built like a ‘tong kayu besi’..with 200K – 500k RM.. as usual la..goverments will silent, no enforcemnt before crash..only on sufrfce ‘operasi’ laa.. not brave to sue the making company..because this ‘ah beng’ ‘ah tong’ cmpany will use the political influnce, hands…dont kacau us la..next PR we would not suppot u anymore..then..smiling la this ahbeng, ah tong company..the victim??? yeahh the public people..wheh having crash..!!! bad attitude!!

hah! yo micro… FYI there is no R66 regulation for double deckers. Fibreglass might look brittle to you but the passenger isnt sitting in the front either.. so youre saying that a driver speeds at 130km, skids off the road into a ravine… few die and its the bodybuilders fault… why dont proton go to court if death occur in their car… and for goodness sake… please please please check the amounts of death comparing between DD and SD before you make such statement… you type so badly it makes you a perfect imbeccile…

To gunshead,
Please refrain from posting such comments, which do not reflect the intentions or views of the blog-owner. For the record, this blog that I’ve set up is not only about bus chassis and bus bodies, but rather anything that is related to bus, as a hobby, a mode of transport and career as a whole.
I would be more than happy to invite any representatives from the bus companies to view this blog and take in any suggestions or feedbacks, or simply to recruit any prospective employees.
This is a blog created by a bus enthusiast for everyone to benefit and enjoy.
